1959 AL Standings and League Leaders

 July 16, 1959

We're halfway through the month of July and the Cleveland Indians have wrestled 1st place in the AL away from the Detroit Tigers. The two teams have been trading the top spot back and forth the last couple of weeks. My Tigers have had a disappointing July (5-9) so far, but luckily the Indians (6-6) haven't been much better.
Detroit's Al Kaline, Charley Maxwell, and Harvey Kuenn are among the league leaders in the top 3 batting categories. Cleveland's Rocky Colavito and Woody Held have been bashing the ball for the Indians.  Chicago's Earyl Wynn (12-6) and Cleveland's Herb Score (10-4, 119 K's) are among the top pitchers in the league.

1959 NL Standings and League Leaders

 July 16, 1959
The Milwaukee Braves are still holding a large lead in the NL as we reach the middle of July. The Los Angeles Dodgers have been hot so far this month (10-2) and have moved into 3rd place.
Milwaukee's Hank Aaron is still making a bid for the Triple Crown (.360 BA, 31 HR 74 RBI) and Warren Spahn (14-3) has been the top pitcher in the league.

1959 AL Game: Det. @ Cle. and Standings

 July 12, 1959

The Cleveland Indians also took the 2nd game of today's double header 9-6. The game wasn't as close as the score indicated. Once again it was Woodie Held that beat Detroit. Held hit a grand slam homerun in the 4th inning and finished the game with 6 RBI.
A note from this game: Detroit turned a 5-4-3 Triple Play in the 7th inning. Both teams started what were normally relief pitchers in the contest and Cleveland's Al Cicotte got the Win. Tom Morgan couldn't get through the 4th and took the Loss By sweeping the doubleheader the Indians now lead Detroit by 1.5 games.

WEB GEMS- Bot 7th: Detroit turns a triple play!

Woodie Held collected 4 RBI with one swing of the bat as the Cleveland Indians
defeated the Detroit Tigers by a score of 9 to 6 at Cleveland Stadium.

Held enjoyed a big day at the plate. He laced a one-base hit plating two runs
in the 1st inning and hit a 'grand salami' to the delight of his teammates in
the 4th inning. Detroit made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to
push the needed runs across.

Al Cicotte(2-3) went 5 innings allowing 1 run for the victory. Tom Morgan(3-4)
was the losing pitcher. Cleveland knocked him around a bit, as he gave up 7
runs in 3 and 1/3 innings.

1959 AL Game: Det. @ Cle.

 July 12, 1959

The 1st place Detroit Tigers lost the game in the 9th inning today to the 2nd place Cleveland Indians 3-2. It was the first game of a doubleheader against the Indians and the loss allowed Cleveland to regain 1st place.
Detroit's Paul Foytack had been throwing a beauty of a game going into the 9th inning. Leading 2-0, Foytack gave up a leadoff homerun to Minnie Minoso making it 2-1. He walked Rocky Colavito after retiring Tito Francona, and then struck out Russ Nixon. Up next came Woody Held and after a visit to the mound, the Tiger's manager decided to stick with Foytack. Wrong decision. Held promptly hit a 2-run blast into the left field stands and Cleveland walked off with a 3-2 victory, and reclaimed 1st place in the standings.
