Final Thoughts After Completing the 1959 MLB Asplayed Season

 February 1, 2025

Well, it took almost 2 years to complete this replay. Health issues, life, etc. were the main reasons it took so long. As I stated at the beginning, my goal was to manage the Detroit Tigers to a better record than their Actual record and try to win the AL Pennant. I succeeded in the first goal but not the second.
This 1959 season was a lot of fun! The Pennant race was very exciting in the AL, not so much in the NL. I manually played probably 95% of the Tigers games and played some other games from both leagues when a good pitching matchup presented itself.
My Tigers battled Cleveland and Chicago for 1st place in the ALto the last week of the season. They definitely overperformed, as did Cleveland while Chicago faltered down the stretch. The NL had a great pennant race IRL and had to play extra games after the regular season ended in a tie between LA and Milwaukee. In my replay, Milwaukee moved into 1st place in late April and never got challenged. They did overperform in my replay, as did LA, but Milwaukee was too strong.
The Detroit Tigers were a team that could really hit. But their pitching was mostly mediocre. Harvey Kuenn won the batting title with a .361BA. Al Kaline was 2nd with a .342 BA. Charlie Maxwell had a monster season for me and win both the HR and RBI crowns. Pitchers Paul Foytack won 20 games and Frank Lary 18. Chicago's Early Wynn (23-9, 2.75 ERA) took the Cy Young Award. Teammate Rocky Colavito (.269 BA, 45 HR, 1128 RBI) won the AL MVP in a close vote with Charlie Maxwell.
In the NL, Milwaukee's Hank Aaron won the Triple Crown (.354 BA, 51 HR, 131 RBI). He won the NL MVP Award. His teammate Warren Spahn (23-9, 3.07 ERA) won the CY Young Award.
Below are the Awards Voting for the AL and NL:

1959 World Series Game 7: Milwaukee Wins the World Series!

 October 9, 1959

The Milwaukee Braves are the 1959 World Series Champions! Milwaukee did the impossible, coming back from 3 games down in the Series and then winning 4 in a row. They came from behind in the 9th inning of Game 5 to stay alive, won Game 6 handily, then came back from a 4-0 deficit in Game 7 to win it all.
Warren Spahn got the start for Milwaukee. Jim Perry got the start for Cleveland. The Indian's Vic Power homered off of Spahn in the bottom of the 1st for a 1-0 Cleveland lead. In the 3rd inning Spahn gave up back-to-back homers. A 2-run shot by Minnie Minoso followed by a solo blast from Rocky Colavito giving Cleveland a 4-0 lead. Milwaukee scored a run in the 5th and the game went into the 7th inning with the Indians holding a 4-1 lead.
In the top of the 7th Milwaukee got 3 straight singles from Lee Maye, Del Crandall and Felix Mantilla scoring a run. Now 4-2, Frank Torre pinch hit for Spahn and that was all for Perry. Joe Gordon brought in lefty Don Ferrarese to pitch to him but Fred Haney replaced Torre with Bobby Avila. Avila grounded out moving the runners up to 2nd and 3rd. Bobby Locke replaced Ferrarese on the mound and he hit pinch-hitter Andy Pafko. Johnny Logan came up next and he delivered a 2-run single tying the game up at 4-4. Eddie Mathews reached on an error to load the bases again. Gordon decided to stick with Locke with Hank Aaron coming up. Aaron hit a medium deep flyball to Minoso in left and after making the catch, Minoso threw Pafko out at the plate for a double play. But the score was now tied 4-4.
In the top of the 8th, Milwaukee scratched out a run on a hit, walk and SacFly by Del Crandall for a 5-4 lead. Cleveland failed to score in the bottom of the 8th. In the top of the 9th Johnny Logan connected for a solo homer and after an out, Aaron smashed a solo shot for a commanding 7-4 Milwaukee lead.
Don McMahon came in to pitch the bottom of the 9th for the Braves. He gave up a single before getting the final out of a 7-4 victory and a World Series Championship for Milwaukee.

1959 World Series Game 6: Mil. @ Cle.

 October 8, 1959

There will be a Game 7 in the 1959 World Series. The Milwaukee Braves came out swinging and crushed the Cleveland Indians 12-2. The Braves scored 4 runs in the 1st inning before Indian's starter Gary Bell could get an out. 3 straight singles and a 3-run homer from Hank Aaron silenced the hometown fans before they could all get in their seats.
Aaron led the 18 hit attack for Milwaukee, going 5 for 5 with 4 runs scored and 3 RBI. Joe Adcock had 4 RBI and hit his 2nd triple in this Series. Not bad for the slowest guy out there on either team. Bob Buhl went the distance for the Braves allowing only 2 runs on 5 hits.
The Cleveland Indians were up 3 games to none in this Series and after Milwaukee's Game 5 dramatic comeback win, the Braves are the hot team heading into Game 7 tomorrow.

Bob Buhl pitched 9 strong innings and right fielder Hank Aaron had 5 hits and
3 RBI at Cleveland Stadium as the Milwaukee Braves embarrassed the Cleveland
Indians by the lopsided score of 12 to 2.

Aaron enjoyed a big day at the plate. He rifled a three-run blast in the 1st
inning, laced a single in the 3rd inning, stroked a one-base hit in the 5th
inning, hit a base-hit in the 6th inning and ripped a single in the 8th
inning. Milwaukee banged out 18 hits on the afternoon.

Buhl(1-1) was the winner allowing 2 runs for the game. Gary Bell(1-1) ended up
with the loss. He was knocked around, surrendering 6 runs in 3 innings.

'Buhl gave us exactly what we needed today.' Fred Haney said. 'When he threw
the fastball he threw it for strikes. They were really fooled by his change.
Most of the time he had them chasing it.'

1959 World Series Game 5

 October 6, 1959

There will be a Game 6 in Cleveland. In a dramatic finish, the Milwaukee Braves came from 3 runs behind in the 9th inning to defeat the Cleveland Indians 6-5.
Cleveland came right out of the gate scoring a run in the 1st inning and added another in the 3rd. Already ahead 2-0 in the 5th inning, Cleveland's Tito Francona smashed a 3-run homer off Lew Burdette for a 5-0 lead. Milwaukee answered with a home run from Eddie Mathews in the 6th and a pinch-hit homer from Casey Wise in the 8th. With a 5-2 lead heading into the bottom of the 9th, the Indians were on the verge of winning the World Series.
Starter Cal McLish was still on the hill for Cleveland in the bottom of the 9th when the roof caved in. McLish gave up a leadoff single to Hank Aaron and a triple to Joe Adcock, ending his day on the mound. Lefty Don Ferrarese was brought in to face Lee Maye, but Maye was pinch-hit for by Andy Pafko. Pafko worked a walk to put runners on 1st and 3rd with nobody out and the score now 5-3. Right-hander Dick Brodowski was brought in to pitch and Del Crandall greeted him with a run scoring single making it 5-4. Bobby Avila was up next and he hit into a force play for the 1st out of the inning. Jim Pisoni pinch-hit for the pitcher, Don McMahon, and he hit one back to the mound that Brodowski misplayed for an error. With the bases loaded, lefty Herb Score was brought in to pitch to lefty Billy Bruton. Bruton worked a walk, forcing in a run and tying the score at 5-5. Continuing the parade of pitchers, Bobby Locke was brought in next to face Johnny Logan.
With the bases loaded, 1 out, game tied, and the crowd on their feet screaming for a hit, Logan laced a base-hit the opposite way into rightfield for the game winning RBI. The improbable win keeps the Braves alive and there will be a Game 6 back in Cleveland.

Shortstop Johnny Logan had 2 base hits at County Stadium as the Milwaukee
Braves came back dramatically to top the Cleveland Indians by the score of 6
to 5.

Milwaukee scored the winning runs in the 9th inning when they came up with 4
runs on 4 hits. Cleveland out-hit Milwaukee 15 to 8, but Milwaukee ended up
with more runs.

Don McMahon(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 1/3 of an inning and
allowing no runs. Dick Brodowski(0-1) took the loss in relief.

'Wow, that was fun!', McMahon said following the game. 'Once in a while you

1959 World Series Game 4

 October 5, 1959

The Milwaukee Braves were looking at the possibility of being swept in this 1959 World Series by the Cleveland Indians, who had been hammering the ball the first three games while getting very good pitching.
Warren Spahn was making his 2nd start of The Series and hadn't pitched well in his first. The probable NL CY Young Award winner had been wild in that game. With a 3-0 Series lead, Cleveland manager Joe Gordon decided to start Jim 'Mudcat' Grant, giving his ace Cal McLish an extra day of rest.
Both starters were on their game at the start of this contest. In the 4th inning, Milwaukee was the first to score. Eddie Mathews singled with 1 out and advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch. After another out, Joe Adcock came through with a clutch RBI single for a 1-0 Braves lead. The score stayed that way until the bottom of the 7th when Lee Maye connected for a 2-run homer and Milwaukee led 3-0.
Spahn got into trouble in the 9th inning and after giving up back-to-back singles he was relieved by Don McMahon. Cleveland proceeded to send 3 straight left-hand pinch-hitters up against him. McMahon allowed a ground out that scored a run, walked a batter, then got Russ Nixon to hit into a game ending double play. Milwaukee wins 3-1 and stays alive in The Series.

1959 World Series Game 3

 October 4, 1959

It was a beautiful sun shiny day at Milwaukee's County Stadium for Game 3 of the 1959 World Series. The Braves were now at home trying to get back into this Series trailing the Cleveland Indians 2 games to none.
Milwaukee had Bob Buhl (16-8, 2.63) on the hill for the start of today's game. He had the lowest ERA of any starter on the staff during the regular season. Cleveland was countering with rookie Jim Perry (13-6, 2.97, 4 Saves). He had appeared in 38 games this year for the Tribe and had 13 starts.
Unfortunately for the Braves and the hometown fans things didn't go so good right from the start. Jimmy Piersall led off with a single, Vic Power singled, Tito Francona moved the runners up on a slow roller, and Rocky Colavito walked to load the bases. Up next, Minno Minoso singled driving in 2 runs before Woodie Held popped out. It looked like Buhl was going to get out of the inning allowing only 2 runs. But that wasn't to be as what followed next was single, double, single and the rout was on. Buhl was chased from the mound and Cleveland led 5-0.
The Indians added 2 runs in the 2nd on a Colavito's 2-run bomb, 1 in the 4th, 4 in the 5th and 1in the 6th on their way to a 13-6 victory. Perry got the Win going 7 innings, allowing 3 hits and 1 earned run.
Cleveland now has a commanding 3-0 lead in the Series. Game 4 tomorrow will feature a repeat of the Game 1 starters, Warren Spahn and Cal McLish facing off again. Milwaukee can only hope for a different result.

The Cleveland Indians had very little trouble at County Stadium downing the
Milwaukee Braves. The score was 13 to 6.

Dick Brown was a thorn in the side of the hometown fans as he enjoyed a fine
day at their team's expense. He doubled bringing home two baserunners in the
1st inning, lined a base-hit in the 5th inning and lofted a solo-blast
'downtown' in the 6th inning. Milwaukee was out-hit by Cleveland, 19 hits to
8.

Jim Perry(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing 2 runs in 7 innings. Bob
Buhl(0-1) absorbed the loss. He allowed 5 runs and 5 hits in 2/3 of an
inning.
