1959 NL Games: LA @ Mil. Hank Aaron reaches 2 milestones

 August 17, 1959

  The LA Dodgers had moved within 5 games of the 1st place Milwaukee Braves before today's doubleheader against the Braves. By the days end, the Dodgers found themselves 7 games behind.
  Milwaukee's pitching was at its best, shutting out LA in both games, 5-0 and 2-0. Bob Buhl threw a 4 hitter in game 1 and Carl Wiley threw a 2 hitter in the nightcap. Hank Aaron hit his NL leading 40th homerun in Game 1 and had 2 RBI, giving him a league leading 100 on the season.

Bob Buhl threw a complete game shutout at County Stadium where the potent
Milwaukee Braves beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5 to 0.
 
Buhl(13-4) was virtually untouchable.  He didn't allow much, just 4 hits and 3
walks in 9 innings.  Both teams' bats went to sleep after the 4th inning with
no runs scored after that point.  
 
Sandy Koufax(7-6) was the loser.  He was hit hard and gave up 7 hits and 3
walks in 4 innings.

Carl Willey shut down the Los Angeles batters on just 2 hits at County Stadium
where the spectacular Milwaukee Braves beat the Los Angeles Dodgers by the
score of 2 to 0.
 
Willey(7-4) was tremendous on the mound for Milwaukee.  He didn't give up
much, just 2 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA to 2.79.  The
pitchers took over after the 1st inning as neither team was able to score
again.  
 
The losing pitcher was Stan Williams(5-8).  'When Willey is on like that it is
a tough game to play, no doubt about it,' Walter Alston said. 'He always
pitches well against us.'
