October 1, 1959
The 1959 World Series opened at Cleveland Stadium today, home of the AL Champion Cleveland Indians. It was a gloomy, cloud covered day after an all night rain in Cleveland. Warren Spahn was on the hill for the Milwaukee Braves and Cal McLish got the start for the Indians.
Cleveland struck first in the bottom of the 4th. After Spahn issued 3 walks, Tito Francona ripped a 2-run double. Woodie Held then hit a SF to add another run and the Indians were up 3-0. Milwaukee struck back in the 5th with 2 runs to make it 3-2.
In the bottom of the 7th, Cleveland scored a run and had the babes loaded with one out when Spahn was relieved by Joey Jay. Vic Power greeted Jay with a bases clearing double and the Indians led 7-2.
McLish had been pinch hit for in the bottom of the 5th and was replaced on the mound by Bobby Locke.Locke pitched 2 scoreless innings and he was followed by Mike Garcia and Mudcat Grant who each pitched a scoreless frame. Cleveland takes Game 1 of the World Series 7-2.
