June 21. 1959
Everyone was expecting a close, low scoring game today when the top 2 teams in the NL squared off with 2 of the top pitchers in the league on the hill. The Milwaukee Braves Warren Spahn (12-1) and the San Francisco Giants Johnny Antonelli (10-4) both gave up a run in the 1st inning before the wheels fell off for Spahn.
5 runs crossed the plate in the 3rd inning for the Giants, and Spahn's day was over. The Braves pitchers that followed had little luck against the Giants who pounded them mercisly and SF walked off with an 18-3 victory. The 18 runs scored were the most in a game by any team in the NL this season. Willie Mays had a 5 for 6 day which included his 16th homer of the season. The Giants pounded out 22 hits in the game and allowed them to salvage a Win in the last of a 3 game series against the 1st place Braves.

Willie Mays had 5 hits and 2 RBI and Johnny Antonelli had a complete game at
Seals Stadium as the San Francisco Giants belted the Milwaukee Braves by the
count of 18 to 3.
Mays made sure the San Francisco fans enjoyed themselves. He hit a bases-empty
home run in the 1st inning, doubled plating a run in the 3rd inning, lashed a
single in the 4th inning, laced a base-hit in the 6th inning and laced a
one-base hit in the 7th inning. San Francisco bats were hot in the 3rd
inning with 5 runs on 5 hits and the 7th inning which saw them score 7 runs
on 6 hits. San Francisco banged out 22 hits on the afternoon.
Antonelli(11-4), allowing 3 runs for the game, picked up the victory. The loss
was charged to Warren Spahn(12-2). He was not very effective, surrendering 6
runs in 2 and 2/3 innings.
