1959 AL Game: Det. @ Chi.

 September 1, 1959

The 3rd place Detroit Tigers are in Chicago for a big 3 game series against the 2nd place White Sox. Both teams are within striking distance of the 1st place Cleveland Indians. The first game features Jim Bunning on the mound for Detroit and Bob Shaw for Chicago.
In a well pitched game, the Tigers scratched out a run in the 2nd inning and another in the 5th. With a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 6th, Bunning gave up a solo homer to Sherm Lollar. Then, with runners on 1st and 3rd, Bunning committed a balk allowing the tying run to score. In the bottom of the 8th, Lollar homed again off Bunning giving Chicago the lead 3-2. In the top of the 9th, the Tigers had runners on 1st and 3rd with 2 out and Al Kaline coming to the plate. Turk Lown got Kaline swinging for strike 3 and the victory for the White Sox.
The win moved Chicago into a 1st place tie with Cleveland and Detroit dropped to 2.5 GB. The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow with a lot on the line.
