Hank Aaron launched 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the National League ballclub
topped the American League club in 10 innings by a score of 8 to 7 at Forbes
Field.

The score was tied at 7 after nine. National League won the game in the 10th
inning. Vada Pinson banged out a single. Hal Smith came to the plate and
reached on an error. After an out was recorded, Bill Mazeroski then reached
on an error giving National League the win and sending the home town fans into
a frenzy. National League totaled 12 hits on the afternoon.

The win went to Lew Burdette(1-0) who allowed no runs in 3 innings. Camilo
Pascual(0-1) absorbed the loss in relief. He was a hard-luck loser as he did
not allow an earned run in his 1 and 1/3 innings of work.

'Aaron led the way - we just jumped on his back and let him take us,' Burdette
said. 'I'm glad I don't have to face him. I'm glad he's on my team.'

1959 AL Game: Clev. @ Det.

 July 4, 1959

The first game of today's 4th of July doubleheader between the Cleveland Indians and Detroit Tigers proved to be an explosive affair. The 2 teams were tied for 1st place in the AL heading into today's games.
Cleveland jumped out to a quick lead in the 1st inning scoring 3 runs on 1 hit. A walk, an error, a sacrifice fly and a double led to the runs off Tiger starter Frank Lary. Detroit came back with a run of their own in the bottom of the 1st before exploding for 7 runs in the bottom of the 2nd. The Tigers sent 13 men to the plate in the 2nd, chasing Indian starter Cal McLish.
With an 8-3 lead, the fans and Tiger manager Jimmy Dykes hoped Lary would settle in for the rest of the way. But this game was far from over. Cleveland put 3 runs on the board in the 3rd, 1 in the 4th, and 3 more to start the 5th, chasing Lary from the mound. Cleveland now held a 10-8 lead. Detroit battled back to take an 11-10 lead heading into the 9th. With 2 outs, nobody on base and Woodie Held coming to the plate, the Tigers had a meeting on the mound and decided to pitch to him. That was a mistake, as Held launched his 21st homerun of the season tying the game up at 11 all.
In the bottom of the 9th the home team came back, again. Rocky Bridges led off with a single. Harvey Kuenn came up next and doubled to centerfield, his 3rd double in the game. The Tiger 3rd base coach Billy Hitchcock gambled, sending Bridges home and Rockey slid under the catcher's tag for the game winning run. The crowd went wild and the Tiger bench emptied in celebration. Detroit takes game 1 12-11 and a 1 game lead over Cleveland in the standings. We'll soon see what's in store for game 2, but it'll be tough to match the excitement we just had.

Center fielder Harvey Kuenn had 4 hits and 4 RBI at Briggs Stadium as the
Detroit Tigers won in their last at-bat beating the Cleveland Indians by the
count of 12 to 11.

Detroit won the game with a run in the bottom of the 9th inning. Rocky
Bridges laced a base-knock. Kuenn was next and he doubled giving Detroit the
win and sending the home town fans into a frenzy. A wild affair, this game
saw the lead change 5 times.

Dave Sisler(3-1) got credit for the victory, pitching 3 innings and allowing 1
run. Jim Perry(5-3) was the loser in relief.

1959 Detroit Tigers News

 July 4, 1959

It's the 4th of July today and Detroit Tigers will be playing the Cleveland Indians in a doubleheader. The two teams are tied for 1st place in the AL. Detroit put a halt to a 4 game losing streak yesterday by defeating the Chicago White Sox 9-4. The Indians hold a 8-3 edge in head-to-head games with the Tigers so far this season. Baseball fans might see some 'fire works' by attending the games today.

1959 AL Standings and League Leaders

 July 1, 1959

The 1959 MLB season heads into July and finds the Detroit Tigers still holding 1st place in the AL. The Tigers were 20-11 in June and have a slim 1 game lead over the Cleveland Indians who went 17-11 last month. The Chicago White Sox had the best record in June going 21-7. This run by the White Sox has moved them into 3rd place, 5 games behind Detroit.  The New York Yankees continue to hover around .500 and in 4th place, 8 games behind. The Boston Red Sox really fell off the pace in June, going a league worst 11-19. They're in 5th place, 11.5 GB.
Detroit's Al Kaline continues to lead the AL in hitting with a .362  BA. He's missed a lot of playing time the last couple of weeks after suffering a fractured cheek bone. His teammate Harvey Kueen is 2nd in BA with a .338 mark. Charlie Maxwell leads the AL in HR (24) and RBI (70). These 3 hitters are a big reason the Tigers continue to hold to the top spot in the AL. They've also gotten some pretty good work from their starting pitchers Frank Lary (10-5, 3.03 ERA), Jim Bunning (9-6, 3.68), Don Mossi (7-4, 3.38) and Paul Foytack (7-5).
Chicago's Early Wynn leads all pitchers in Wins (12) and Bob Shaw has the top ERA in the AL (1.92). Cleveland's Rocky Colavito is 2nd in HR (20) and 3rd in RBI (55).

1959 NL Standings and League Leaders

 July 1, 1959

As the calendar is flipped to the month of July, the Milwaukee Braves continue to play at a high level and have increased their lead over the 2nd place Cincinnati Reds to 8.5 games. Milwaukee had the best record in June, going 18-11. While their hitting has been very good, the Braves pitching is what is far superior to any other team in the NL.
Even with the top hitter in the league, Hank Aaron (.346 BA, 26 HR, 62 RBI), making a bid for the Triple Crown and their other top slugger, Eddie Mathews (20 HR, 56 RBI), it's the Brave's starting pitching that's the most impressive. Warren Spahn (13-2, 3.00 ERA), Lew Burdette (11-6, 2.72 ERA) and Bob Buhl (8-3, 1.94 ERA) head the mound corps.
Among others that are having fine seasons are St. Louis Cardinal Ken Boyer (.333 BA, 20 HR, 54 RBI) who is also making a bid for the Triple Crown and San Francisco Giant Willie Mays (.298 BA, 20 HR, 56 RBI). Boyer's teammate Joe Cunningham had been turning heads with his .340 BA and a NL best .425 OBP.
The 2nd place Reds have the highest scoring offense in the NL by a large margin: 418 RS vs. 343 for the Giants. It's been a complete team effort for Cincinnati with no real standout player. Vada Pinson, Frank Robinson, Gus Bell, Jerry Lynch, Roy McMillan and Johnny Temple have all contributed in various ways. 4th place LA's pitcher Don Drysdale (11-6, 2.40 ERA, 117 K) is one of the best in the league.
