 September 19, 1959

followed, but he was set down on strikes. Kluszewski was up next and he

bases. Joe Hicks got his turn next, but he was a strikeout victim. Jim
McAnany then drew a walk making Chicago the victors to the delight of the
home town faithful. Even though they scored in 5 different innings, Detroit
was not able to pull off the win.

Burnside(2-4) was hit with the loss in relief. He pitched 2/3 of an inning
giving up 3 hits and 1 walk.

1959 NL League Leaders: Aaron's TC Bid

 September 19, 1959

Milwaukee's Hank Aaron looked like he had a lock on a Triple Crown season. But Aaron has suddenly gone cold at the plate and has hit only 3 HR's in September so far. Meanwhile, Chicago's Ernie Banks continues to mash big flies at a steady rate. He's now only 1 HR behind Hank.

Joey Jay(6-9) thrilled the fans at Memorial Coliseum as he crafted a no-hit
masterpiece against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Milwaukee Braves won by a
final score of 2 to 0.

Jay was obviously at the top of his game as he set the Los Angeles batters
down like so many dominoes. He walked 2 Los Angeles batters. The Milwaukee
players and coaches started to leave Jay alone with his thoughts after the
game reached the 7th inning. By the time the 9th inning rolled around, you
could hear a pin drop every time he went to his wind-up - and an explosion
after every out. Milwaukee took care of Los Angeles with no trouble in the
bottom of the 9th.

Roger Craig(10-4) absorbed the loss. What a show!' Fred Haney said. 'Jay was
great out there -- I'm happy that he got it.'

1959 AL Standings

 September 15, 1959

The Cleveland Indians Magic # is down to 6. With only 10 games or less for the contending teams remaining, the Indians look like a lock to win the AL Pennant. Detroit and Chicago have 6 games left against each other, so they'll probably be knocking each other further back. But funnier things have happened though. Detroit fans will have to keep their fingers crossed.

Roger Craig(10-3) was on top of his game in Los Angeles as he tossed a beauty
of a no-hitter against the hopeless Philadelphia Phillies. The Los Angeles
Dodgers won by a score of 7 to 0.

Craig was spectacular. He had excellent control, walking only one. The
tension started to build around the 6th inning. By the 9th inning the crowd
was electrified. Los Angeles totaled 13 hits on the night.

Don Cardwell(4-12) was the losing pitcher. He got hit hard, allowing 12 hits
and 4 walks in 7 and 1/3 innings. Craig was in a jubilant mood after the
game. 'If I'd known I was going to throw a no hitter I would have gotten a
haircut!' he said, much to the delight of the clubhouse gathering.

WEB GEMS- Bot 8th: Frank House blocked the plate, saving a run!

New York fans certainly got their money's worth at Yankee Stadium. Art
Ditmar(16-7) pitched a rare no-hitter as the New York Yankees toppled the
Kansas City Athletics 18 to 0.

Ditmar had an evening to remember. Heck, it's one we'll all remember! What a
game at Yankee Stadium! He surrendered no walks and could have tossed a
perfect game if it were not for the fielding error. The tension started to
build around the 6th inning. By the 9th inning the crowd was electrified.
New York bats were hot in the 4th inning with 4 runs on 5 hits, the 6th
inning which saw them score 4 runs on 4 hits and the 7th inning which saw
them plate 4 runs on 3 hits. New York dominated offensively as they scored
in 6 different innings.

Johnny Kucks(8-9) was the losing pitcher. New York scored big getting 10 runs
off him in 5 and 2/3 innings. 'Ditmar was simply incredible' losing pitcher
Kucks said. 'I hate to admit this but I'd pay to watch a man pitch like
that'

Second baseman Felix Mantilla connected with a 'big fly' and had 2 RBI and Lew
Burdette had a strong outing as the very talented Milwaukee Braves outscored
the Pittsburgh Pirates 6 to 0.

Burdette(20-10) was in control of the game from the outset. He didn't allow
much, just 5 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings. Milwaukee rapped out 10 hits for
the afternoon.

Bob Friend(13-17) was the losing pitcher. He was touched for 10 hits and 2
walks in 7 innings. Danny Murtaugh was obviously impressed with the pitching
of Burdette, 'That guy made us look a little silly out there this afternoon.
We just couldn't get to him at all - everything was working for him. I just
hope that he got that kinda performance out of his system.'

1959 Detroit Tigers News

 September 6, 1959

With 18 games left in the 1959 regular season, my Detroit Tigers find themselves 3 GB the 1st place Cleveland Indians. The 2 teams will meet in a doubleheader tomorrow in Cleveland. Detroit is 7-13 this year against the Indians and these are the last 2 games scheduled between the teams.
Detroit has won 3 in a row lately, and Cleveland just swept 3 games from the Chicago White Sox to move into 1st place. Detroit has 6 games remaining against Chicago and they are 8-8 vs. the Sox.
It looks like it may be a wild finish to the season between the 3 teams.
