 September 2, 1959

The Chicago White Sox ended up sweeping the big 3 game series against the Detroit Tigers by winning the 2nd game of today's double-header 3-2. Detroit trailed 3-1 entering the 9th inning and loaded the bases with a single and 2 walks with nobody out. Gerry Staley came on in relief and walked the first batter he faced, forcing in a run to make it 3-2. Then Staley bared down and got a strikeout, popout and flyout to Save the Win for Chicago.

1959 AL Game: Det.@ Chi.

 September 2, 1959

The first game of 2 today at Comiskey Park in Chicago was played in very poor weather. It seemed to effect Detroit's Rocky Bridges the most as he committed 2 errors that helped the White Sox defeat the Tigers 7-4.
Chicago got a run in the 1st, and 1 in the 4th on a homer by Sherm Lollar who hit 2 yesterday. Detroit bounced back with a run in the 5th and 1 in the 6th. They had a chance to tie it in the 6th, but Eddie Yost was thrown out at the plate by leftfielder Al Smith.
The White Sox broke the game open in the bottom of the 7th when they tallied 4 runs for a 7-2 lead. The big hit for Chicago was a 2 out 2-run triple by Louis Aparicio. Detroit got 2 back in the 8th, but Turk Lown came in and shut them down the rest of the way for his 17th Save of the season.
With the Win, Chicago moves into 1st place past the Cleveland Indians who lost today. Detroit will get another shot at Chicago in Game 2 tonight.

1959 AL Game: Det. @ Chi.

 September 1, 1959

The 3rd place Detroit Tigers are in Chicago for a big 3 game series against the 2nd place White Sox. Both teams are within striking distance of the 1st place Cleveland Indians. The first game features Jim Bunning on the mound for Detroit and Bob Shaw for Chicago.
In a well pitched game, the Tigers scratched out a run in the 2nd inning and another in the 5th. With a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 6th, Bunning gave up a solo homer to Sherm Lollar. Then, with runners on 1st and 3rd, Bunning committed a balk allowing the tying run to score. In the bottom of the 8th, Lollar homed again off Bunning giving Chicago the lead 3-2. In the top of the 9th, the Tigers had runners on 1st and 3rd with 2 out and Al Kaline coming to the plate. Turk Lown got Kaline swinging for strike 3 and the victory for the White Sox.
The win moved Chicago into a 1st place tie with Cleveland and Detroit dropped to 2.5 GB. The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow with a lot on the line.

1959 AL Standings

 September 1, 1959

My Detroit Tigers held 1st place for most of this 1959 season until the very last day in July when the Cleveland Indians took the top spot. The Indians have held 1st place for all but 2 days in August. The Chicago White Sox moved into 1st for those 2 days.
Now that we've reached the last month of the 1959 season, it looks like a fierce battle for the AL Pennant will be happening. The Tigers have had the most explosive offense and the White Sox the best pitching this year. Chicago had the best record in August, 19-11. The Indians are 2nd in hitting and 3rd in pitching. It should be an exciting last month.

1959 AL League Leaders

 September 1, 1959

Several Detroit Tigers are represented in the top 5 of several pitching and batting categories in the AL. Charlie Maxwell, my biggest surprise in this 1959 replay, leads the league in Homeruns (41) and RBI (125). Harvey Kuenn leads in BA (.354). Al Kaline is 3rd in BA (.332) and 2nd in RBI (106). Both Frank Lary and Paul Foytack are 2nd in Wins with 15. Jim Bunning is tops in K's (168).
Chicago's Early Wynn (20-7, 2.64 ERA, 161 K) has been the top pitcher in the AL. Louis Aparicio leads all of MLB by a wide margin in Steals with 51. New York's Art Ditmar is having a very good season (14-7, 1.93 ERA). Cleveland's Rocky Colavito is 2nd in HR (38) and 3rd in RBI (105).

The Milwaukee Braves head into the last month of the 1959 MLB season still holding a commanding edge on 1st place. They've been in 1st since the 2nd week of the season. LA, Cincinnati, and San Francisco have made small attempts at challenging the Braves but all have come up short.

1959 NL League Leaders

 September 1, 1959

Here are the NL League Leaders in some of the top categories. Milwaukee's Hank Aaron (.354, 45, 111) continues his quest for the Triple Crown. He and his teammates Eddie Mathews (36, 91) and Billy Bruton (.312) lead the Brave's powerful offensive attack. The pitching staff is also the best in the NL. Warren Spahn, Lew Burdette and Bob Buhl head that mound corps.
Cincinnati's Frank Robinson (.327 BA) and Gus Bell (.323 BA, 103RBI) have shown prowess at the plate. Chicago SS Ernie Banks is 2nd in the NL in homers (39) while being a top-notch fielder. St. Louis Cardinal 3rd baseman Ken Boyer is another top-notch fielder who is 4th in homers (30) and 3rd in RBI (94).
LA's Don Drysdale (19 W, 2.52 ERA, 202 K's) may be the top pitcher in the NL as he is close to netting the pitching Triple Crown.
