1959 Detroit Tigers hire new manager today

 May 3, 1959

It was announced after their game last night, Detroit Tiger manager Bill Norman was stepping down from his position for health reasons. Jimmy Dykes has been named the new manager of the Tigers. He'll be tested early as the Tigers have a doubleheader today against the New York Yankees.
(In actuality, Norman was fired on this date for the team's 2-15 start to the 1959 season. The Tigers are playing well in my replay, so I decided to let him go for health reasons)

1959 AL Standings and League Leaders

 May 1, 1959

The first month of the 1959 season is complete and the Boston Red Sox find themselves in 1st place in the AL. They are 2nd in offense and pitching in the league. The 2nd place New York Yankees boast the top pitching so far this year.
My Detroit Tigers, led by Al Kaline (.413BA, 6 HR, 22 RBI) boast the best offense in the AL. Kaline is 1st in all 3 Triple Crown categories. Cleveland Indian Rockey Colavito (6 HR, 13 RBI) and Washington Senator Harmon Killebrew (6 HR, 14 RBI) have both been bashing the ball at a good clip.
Detroit's 9-6 record is already 7 games better than their 2-12 actual start in 1959. The Tigers were actually 2-15 on May 3rd when Manager Bill Norman was fired and replaced by Jimmy Dykes. I guess Norman will be replaced in my replay for reasons other than Detroit's record.

1959 NL Standings and League Leaders

 May 1, 1959

The Milwaukee Braves have started off the 1959 season with a bang! They've won 11 in a row and after the first month of the season they lead the NL with a 12-1 record. Their Hitting and Pitching are the best in the league. Hank Aaron (.474 BA, 5 HR, 19 RBI), Warren Spahn (5-0, 2.06 ERA) and Lew Burdette (4-1, 2.34 ERA) have led the way for the Braves. Aaron is 1st in BA, 2nd in RBI and 3rd in HR in the NL. Spahn and Burdette have won the most games in the league.
The Los Angeles Dodgers have also had an impressive start this year. Their 11-6 record is good for 2nd place. The 3rd place San Francisco Giants have one of the best all-around players in baseball. Willie Mays leads the NL in HR (7) and RBI (23). He also patrols CF flawlessly and has a rocket arm.

1959 AL Game: Bal. @ Det.

 April 29, 1959

The Detroit Tigers pounded the Baltimore Orioles today 13-2. Al Kaline had a fantastic day at the plate. He was 4 for 5 with 6 RBI. Detroit exploded for 9 runs in the 7th inning to put this game out of reach for the Orioles. Kaline had 2 hits in the 7th, 1 which was a Grand Slam homerun. The 6 RBI are the most for a player in any game this season in the AL. Frank Lary pitched well for his 2nd Win this year.
Detroit is now 8-6 on the season, good for 2nd place in the AL. In actual play in the 1959 season, Detroit had an awful 2-12 start.

Al Kaline had 4 hits as the Detroit Tigers ballclub embarrassed the reeling
Baltimore Orioles by the count of 13 to 2.

Kaline provided much of the offense. He lined a base-hit which was good for
two runs in the 1st inning, stroked a one-base hit in the 5th inning, ripped

1959 AL Standings and League Leaders

 April 24, 1959

After 2 weeks of play in the 1959 season, the Boston Red Sox are in 1st place in the AL. I've managed to keep my Detroit Tigers from the awful start they had in the actual '59 season. Currently the Tigers are tied with the Cleveland Indians in 2nd place. In a big surprise, the Indians 2nd baseman Billy Martin leads the AL in HR (5), is 3rd in RBI (11), and 4th in BA at .357.

Willie Mays had 4 hits as the San Francisco Giants really laid it on the Los
Angeles Dodgers 14 to 3.

Mays was really in 'the zone'. He ripped a single in the 4th inning, lined a
one-base hit which was good for two runs in the 5th inning, blasted a Grand
Slam homerun in the 6th inning and smacked a single in the 9th inning. Los
Angeles was out-hit by San Francisco, 14 hits to 7.

Stu Miller(2-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 and 2/3 innings and
allowing 3 runs. The losing pitcher was Stan Williams(2-1). 'It's almost
like the ball was trying to hit my bat,' Mays said. 'Whenever I would swing,
the ball found the sweet spot.'
